Cerritos Plane Crash Remembered 30 Years Later

JOSH: WELCOME BACK I’M JEFF VAUGHAN. SUZIE: I’M SUZIE SUH, TODAY ACTORS REMARKS THE ANNIVERSARY OF A TRAGEDY THAT KILLED 82 PEOPLE IN CERRITOS. IT WAS 30 YEARS AGO TODAY THAT A JET KILLED EVERYONE ON BOARD AND EVEN SOME ON THE GROUND. JOSH: TODAY SOME GATHERED AROUND TO REMEMBER THOSE AND HONOR THOSE WHO DIED. CBS 2 DAVE LOPEZ TAKES A LOOK BACK AT THAT DISASTER. 30 YEARS AGO ON A QUIET, CLOUDLESS, PICTURE PERFECT AFTERNOON IN THIS CERRITOS NEIGHBORHOOD, JUST BEFORE NOON, DISASTER. A SMALL SINGLE-ENGINE PLANE, A PIPER ARCHER, A FAMILY OF FOUR ONBOARD OUT OF TORRANCE. CLIPPED THE TAIL OF AN ARROW MEXICO WAS APPROACHING LAX. I JUST REMEMBER THE SMELL DEATH, BODY PARTS ALL OVER THIS PLACE. DID YOU BELIEVE WHAT YOU WERE SEEING? I DID NOT BELIEVE WHAT I WAS SEEING. PART OF THE DC9 IN FLAMES. ON CA. THE PIPER CRASHED INTO A FIELD THAT WAS EMPTY IN A ELEMENTARY. ON THE GROUND, 15 PEOPLE KILLED WHO LIVED IN HOMES. ON THE PLANES, 67 DEAD. ALL TOGETHER, 82 PEOPLE KILLED. ALMOST PASSED OUT FROM THE SMELL. CURRENT SUPERVISOR DON WAS THE MARRY OF CERRITOS 30 YEARS AGO. AUGUST 31st, 1986. HE HAD JUST LEFT CHURCH. ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU KNOW I REALIZE MY FRIENDS HOUSE, GONE. LINDA AND DENNIS LIVED IN THIS HOUSE. DESTROYED. DENNIS WAS WITH HIS SISTER. THEIR SON JEFF IRONICALLY WAS WITH THE MAYOR AT CHURCH. LINDA, THE MOTHER DECIDED TO STAY HOME THAT MORNING. SHE DIED INSTANTLY WHEN THE PLANE HIT THE HOUSE. PRETTY MUCH A BLUR. LINDA TOLLMAN LIVED ON RIVA STREET THAT DAY. HER HOUSE WAS NOT DESTROYED. I GET THE FEELING PEOPLE DON’T LIKE TO TALK ABOUT IT. WE DON’T. FOR THE MOST PART, THAT’S TRUE. MANY PEOPLE HAVE MOVED AWAY. GAIL STAYED. WE WERE SITTING IN OUR KITCHEN AND ALL OF A SUDDEN IT GOT DARK. AND THEN SHE HEARD A SOUND THAT SHE WON’T FORGET. WE THINK ABOUT IT ALL THE TOMB. THE PILOT OFFICE COURSE AND WAS GOING TO BE MAKING THE LANDING AT 12:05. AT EXACTLY 11:56 CAME THE COLLISION AND THE DC9 FELL STRAIGHT TO THE GROUND. THE STENCH, THE FIRE, THE CHAOS, IT WAS SUCH A HORRIFIC SCENE IN THIS QUIET NEIGHBORHOOD. IT WAS SUNDAY, THE SUNDAY BEFORE LABOR DAY, AND PEOPLE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO. THOSE WHOSE HOMES WERE NOT DESTROYED RAN OUTSIDE AND WERE IN SUCH SHOCK, SUCH PANIC, MANY OF THEM WENT RIGHT BACK IN. WE FOUND FAMILIES HIDING IN THEIR BEDROOMS OR IN THEIR CLOSETS NOT — COULDN’T FIGURE OUT WHERE THEIR ALIVE. BECAUSE THEY TAKE ONE STEP OUTSIDE AND THEY SEE THIS DC9 AND THEIR NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE AND IT’S, OH, MY GOD WHAT HAS HAPPENED? THE UNBELIEVABLE OCCURRED.

  1. I was just mentioning this to a friend of mine. Had a friend & her daughter that lived in that neighborhood. I still have nightmares when I think of what she described to me that was in her yard. May all those in the accident RIP & may the ones left behind find peace.

  2. I was giving birth to my daughter. I just remembered my husband trying to tell me something about the News and I was in labor. Then my little girl was Born she now is 31 years old

  3. I lived in Downey at the time and I was hanging out with my buddies outside ( I was 12 ) on imperial highway when we suddenly heard a giant BOOM! Then we seen smoke going up in the sky toward the Cerritos area. We rode our bikes down the San Gabriel river bed and went up some side street until we got next to the area where the plane had crashed. There were police and firefighters everywhere and they told us kids to get the hell out of there. So we did! I remember seeing pieces of metal laying on the street and the smell of smoke and jet fuel was overpowering.

  4. I saw this happen. I saw the fire trucks rushing to the scene. Then,……we went to Knott's Berry Farm. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  6. I was 4 years old living in nearby Anaheim I donโ€™t remember since I was small but do remember chit chat about the crash years later as we had family friends in Cerritos talk about it.

  7. i lived in norwalk at alondra and bloomfield in the circle across from the oneways. that jet crashed less than a mile from my house. i was home with my sister and my brother. we went to look, and it was a burning chaos with bodies and bloodless parts everywhere and it was surreal. ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜Ÿ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ๐Ÿ˜”

  8. The pilot of the piper, my God!
Such an idiot. What the heck was he thinking. Many lives were lost thanks to that idiot.

  9. Why was this news story so rushed? They show a new house and claimed that it was the house destroyed in 1986. No before & after photos or anything of the crash site.
